The New Jerusalem Bible: Saint's Devotional Edition.
With writings from the saints
integrated throughout the text, this new edition of the popular, widely
acclaimed New Jerusalem Bible brings together the two most important pillars
of the Christian faith. Ever since the days of the early Church, believers
have looked to the stories and reflections of the saints for guidance on
living in harmony with God. The New Jerusalem Bible: Saints Devotional Edition
is the first Bible to present the insights and interpretations of the saints
directly next to the relevant passages in the Scriptures.
Featuring two hundred readings selected by Bert Ghezzi, this special edition
of The New Jerusalem Bible will enhance readers’ understanding and
appreciation of both the biblical texts and the lives of the saints. For
example, the story of Adam and Eve’s expulsion from the Garden of Eden is
followed by an excerpt from the writings of Saint Gregory Nazianzen, which
brings new meaning to an already familiar tale. Interspersed throughout the
text is a twenty-part lesson on studying, praying, and living the Scriptures,
which contains longer selections from the saints’ writings addressing these
specific issues. The Bible also includes a list of themes for easy reference,
as well as a calendar of saints and a list of patron saints.
First published in 1986, The New Jerusalem Bible quickly established itself as
a favorite translation, admired for both the accessibility of its language and
its faultless scholarship. Augmented with the wisdom of the saints, this new
edition will extend its well-deserved reputation and popularity among lay
readers and scholars alike. Sells for $35.00 but our price is $26.95

New! Navarre Bible: Wisdom
Books. This volume, which follows the
pattern of the highly successful Navarre Bible New Testament, consists of the
Revised Standard Version and the New Vulgate with a Commentary by members of
the Faculty of Theology at the University of Navarre, Spain. The commentaries,
which help to explain the doctrinal and practical meaning of the scriptural
text, draw on a rich variety of sources - church documents, the exegesis of
the Fathers and the Doctors, and the works of prominent spiritual writers,
particularly St. Josemaria Escriva, who initiated the Navarre Bible project.
One of the most striking aspects of both these books is the use of poetry. Although poetic language is to be found in many Old Testament books, it is the predominant form in these ones. The book of Psalms and the Song of Songs (or Song of Solomon) contain lyric poetry, whereas the other books consist mainly of proverbs or aphorisms in verse form, and wisdom poems in varying lengths. This is primarily why the Psalms and the Song are described as poetical books, and the others as wisdom books. This volume also contains notes, introductions, and Latin. The editors' notes, which are rarely very technical, are designed to elucidate the spiritual and theological message of the Bible. Save $3.00 on this volume. Order today.
The
Bible and the Liturgy by Jean Danielou, S. J.
"...Father Danielou shows a life-long, intimate friendship with the early fathers of the church. With an amazing ease and dexterity he will call upon these holy writers to explain the early origin as well as the deeper and more primitive meaning of the sacramental rites...[The Bible and the Liturgy] will provide a much deeper understanding of our principal liturgical rites in themselves and in their relation to the Passion...There is much profit and inspiration in this book, so wonderfully rich in patristic lore."-The Passionist.
"No serious student of the Liturgy, no cleric especially, will want to miss the depths of meaning conveyed by the sacramental signs which this book reveals."-The Catholic World
Trained in the Calvinist conception of sacraments as a Presbyterian, Scott Hahn became a minister only to discover the truth of the Catholic faith. This was most evident in the sacraments, which Scott reminds us are based upon covenant oaths (hence the "swearing") and "essential to our salvation." He reminds us that Jesus said concerning baptism, "unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God" (John 3:5). On the Eucharist, he said, "unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his Blood, you have no life in you" (John 6: 53). Thus, the Bible does not speak of sacraments as merely symbols, memorials or rituals, but rather "They mark the moments in history--world history, salvation history and personal history--when God was making a new start with His people." They are also accurately described as the "masterworks of God" and "the actions of the Holy Spirit at work in His body, the Church." But what are the effects of the sacraments? what of their mystery? where do we find them in Scripture? Are they in the writings of the Early Church? How do we enter into a covenant relationship with God? You say you don't understand why Catholics do not invite non-Catholics to receive the Eucharist or the Catholic view of Marriage as a permanent bond between man and woman? You will after you read Dr. Hahn's book.
"This book is easy to read but profound in its implications ..." Francis Cardinal George, OML, Archbishop of Chicago
"This book will be a big help to Catholics confronted by careless and inaccurate teaching about the sacraments. It will also be a big help to Protestants, who have often lost even the sacramental piety of the Reformation and who are beginning to rediscover the sacraments instituted by Christ." Fr. Benedict Groeschel, CFR
The Central premise for understanding the human person is the incarnate Son of God. This theme figures prominently in Pope John Paul's first encyclical,
"Redemptor Hominis" and in addresses he gave to his weekly audiences between September 1979 and November 1984. These presentations, captured in this work, comprise a catechesis of the bodily dimension of human personhood, sexuality, and marriage in the light of Biblical revelation. With a remarkable form of Biblical analysis, the Holy Father begins with the experience of man and woman in the garden of Eden, exploring the original unity of man and woman in the first section of the book. He moves from the lessons to be learned about human love in the Book of Genesis to Christ's Sermon on the Mount, where he examines what is in the heart of man and what constitutes its purity. In Part Two Pope John Paul II explains St. Paul's teaching on the human body exploring what true human freedom really means. Sin, justification and the gift of grace all figure into the divine equation for man's redemption. The next subject is the Resurrection of the body, which is explored in depth and followed by a chapter entitled "Virginity for the Sake of the Kingdom." This is followed by a chapter on
The Sacramental nature of Marriage, preserving its sanctity and sacramental
character, guaranteeing its indissoluble nature and beauty, but also dealing with the challenges presented by
concupiscence [weakened will and attraction to sin due to original sin] and the tendency of love to be "ever seeking and never satisfied." The final chapter concerns reflections on the Pope's great encyclical,
"Humanae Vitae" or "On Human Life." This addresses the Church's 2000 year old position on the transmission of life, the discipline that
ennobles and the nature of responsible parenthood, among other topics in this fascinating and most relevant papal teaching. Every family should have a copy!
It is already a classic.
A Textual Concordance of the Holy Scriptures Arranged by Topics and Giving the Actual Passages contains is an unparalleled asset to any serious student of the Bible. It contains 1900 topics arranged in alphabetical order with 18,000 Biblical passages provided. The Bible passages are taken from the Douay Rheims Bible, which is an exact, word for word (slavishly faithful) translation of the Latin Vulgate Bible translated by St. Jerome between 375-415 A.D. The Latin Vulgate was universally used throughout the Latin or Western rite of the Catholic Church from its completion in 415 A.D. to 1444 A.D. It was the first book printed by famed printer Johann Gutenberg. The Council of Trent declared it free from error in matters of faith and morals and the Douay Rheims is a faithful 16th century translation of the Vulgate. The Douay Rheims Bible is therefore possesses a clarity and power often missing in other translations.
A Textual Concordance, although not exhaustive (there are some passages not cited), nonetheless is a treasure because it allows the reader to see the unity of the Bible in terms of language, symbols, history, topics, prophecy and overall intent. It is a marvelous way to find comfort in the Bible's message, to research supporting passages by topic, to learn the integrity and depth of the Bible's message. As St. Jerome himself said, "Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ."

Get Us Out of Here by Maria Simma speaks with Nicky Eltz.

"The world beyond is speaking. It is offering advice, asking for help, and giving answers. It exists and speaks about life - our life here and of possible consequences of our behavior. It tells us that it is not the same to be humble, loving, good, merciful, loyal and honest as it is to be proud, loveless, bad, merciless, betraying and dishonest. At death this is not forgotten but rather remembered in total clarity. Not only is the punishment, or better yet the cleansing, spoken about; but also the length of this cleansing and so very much more!! ...all personal doubts disappeared once I too had met and spoken with Maria Simma."

This classic three volume work is a collection of the Early Church Fathers of the Church, which is most valuable for giving us a picture in words of the faith of these great men, many of whom were
martyrs for the faith and many of whom served as bishops. Preceding the selected passages from the works of these 66 men, including such great writers as St. Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons, and the first Biblical theologian, recognized by Protestants and Catholics alike, and St. Augustine of Hippo, the premier theologian of all the early Church fathers. Included are Didache, which was a document expressing truths of the faith taught to early converts in the first century and subtitled, "The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles." The book is organized with short biographical and historical introductions to each Father and to their major works. The doctrinal index provided for each volume is of immense value in finding information on specific topics. There is also an index of Scriptural citations which is invaluable, as well as a general index. In short, this work is indexed to the hilt and very easy to use when searching for a particular topic or doctrine to see what the Early Church thought and wrote about it. The work of the Councils of the Church and of the many works
combating heresy give a good historical picture of the Early Church. These writings by men like St. Polycarp, St. Justin the Martyr, St. Clement, Tertullian, Origen, St. Gregory the Miracle Worker, St.
Methodius, Augustine, Ambrose, Gregory the Great, etc make this a fascinating and invaluable source book for Christians.

The Lamb's Supper by Dr. Scott Hahn is already a best seller. This new study of the Book of Revelation relates how the Eucharist and the Liturgy of the Catholic Church are reflected in the Book of Revelation in an exciting, in-depth study, which will fill you with a burning love for God's word and a new awe and respect for the holy Sacrifice of the Mass. "In Part One ('The Mass Revealed'), he shows the scriptural basis for the main parts of the Mass. In Part Two ('The Revelation of Heaven'), he shows how the Book of Revelation reflects the heavenly liturgy and this is the golden thread that runs through- out the book-- tying together the various elements of John's visions--just as it reflects the early Church's eucharistic worship. The vision of Revelation focuses on the Lamb of God, which is cited 48 times in Scripture to refer to Christ. This is the focus, not the mark of the beast or the thousand year reign! Scott demonstrates the presence of the Catholic liturgy in every chapter of Revelation and parallels it with the Catholic Mass with powerful insights. He also demonstrates that this "apocalyptic" view of the Mass and the Eucharist was a commonplace in the early Church Fathers, who understood it and the import of liturgy in spiritual warfare and in the communion of the saints. In Part Three ('Revelation for the Masses'), he shows how a biblical vision of the Mass can transform our daily struggles if we unite them with the redemptive sacrifice of Christ, thus coming to a greater share in His royal priestly victory over the world, the flesh, and the devil. Our worship is a participation in the heavenly liturgy.
Best selling author, apologist and Professor of Theology Scott Hahn has done it again with a
follow-up to his best seller The Lamb's Supper. Employing the same accessible, entertaining style Scott scores another hit.
Most Christians are aware that the life of Christ is foreshadowed in the Old Testament but they are probably not aware of Mary's presence in the Old Testament. He shows that just as Jesus is the "new Adam" so Mary was for the Early Church Fathers the "new Eve." He unravels the Marian mystery in the Book of Revelation and shows how it was foretold in the first book of the Bible, Genesis, and in the story of Kind David's queen mother. Building on Scriptural foundations Scott examines the basis for the Immaculate Conception, Perpetual Virginity, Assumption and Coronation of Our Lady. Scott plumbs the depths of the mysteries and poetry of God's word to bring Mary into a new and beautiful light. As St. Therese of Liseux wrote of Mary, "In you the Almighty has done great things. I want to ponder them and bless him for them." She is Christ's masterpiece and far from taking away from His glory, she wants us only to focus on her Son. She is, after all, a good mother!
Genesis proclaims everything God made as "good." but as Scott notes with great insight, the first time God said something was "not good" in Scripture, it was His comment that "It is not good that the man should be alone" (Gn 2:18). Playing on this theme and beginning with his own romance with Kimberly Kirk, now Kimberly Hahn, Scott goes from the ordinary to the extraordinary, namely our families to God's family. The subtitle of the book says it all, we can "Find our Family in the Church and the Trinity." Scott shows how our own family relations, namely brother, sister, father and mother, all mirror the inner life of the Trinity. As he does so well, he employs Scripture, deepening our understanding of it, along with the writings of the Early Church Fathers and the Magisterial teaching of the Church to show the intimate and powerful relationship between the human and divine expressions of love. Includes nearly 40 pages of critical documentation. 192 pages.

Paul Thigpen debunks the Rapture, showing that it is unbiblical and that it contradicts basic Christian beliefs (for instance, it posits three comings of Christ, not just two). He examines the recent popularity of the Left Behind series of books and explains why the Rapture appeals to so many Fundamentalists and other Christians. He also looks at Catholic analogues of the Rapture. And he does all this in a book that is engagingly written and carries not the least hint of rancor.
"In this diamond of a book, Dr. Thigpen not only addresses misguided apocalyptic thought among Protestants; he also presents the history of certain strands of popular apocalyptic thought among Catholics. He also offers a tremendously helpful summary of how to discern the validity and trustworthiness of private revelations. He offers a perspective on Christ's second coming based firmly on the teaching of the Magisterium."

The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a more than a statement of beliefs, but rather a compendium of all catholic doctrine on both faith and morals. It is presented
biblically and liturgically, that is with thousands of Bible quotes and references and with a parallel discussion of the liturgy, which
mirrors the life of the our Savior. It is beautifully written and a pleasure to read. It required six years of work to produce. It systematically presents the teaching of Sacred Scripture, the living Tradition of the Church and teaching of
Magisterium [pope and bishops in concert] as well as the spiritual heritage of the Saints and Doctors of the Church. It is divided into four parts, namely, the Creed, the Sacred Liturgy, the Christian way of life and Christian prayer. It allows one to sense the "wonderful unity of the mystery of God, his saving will, as well as the central place of Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, sent by the Father, made man in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit, to be our Savior. Having risen and died, Christ is always present in His Church, especially in the sacraments; he is the source of our faith, the model of Christian conduct, and the teacher of our prayer." It has a marvelous index of citations in the back that is very valuable. This is the Second Edition. Revised to conform completely with the official Latin text promulgated by Pope John Paul II in 1997, the book now also includes an extensive glossary and analytical index to make it even more “user friendly.”

"It is refreshing to come across a non-technical commentary which seeks to expound the Word of God according to the accumulated wisdom of the Church .... Most people desiring to understand the scriptures are looking for something that will deepen their reverence for the Word of God, help them apply it to their daily lives, and move them to prayer." Faith Magazine
This commentary explains in terms that scholars and non-scholars alike can understand the spiritual meaning of the word of God presented in the first five books of the Old Testament, referred to as the Pentateuch and also known as the Torah or Law. Genesis examines the origins of the world, of man and of Israel, establishing a covenant relationship with God as Father. Exodus, the second book, records the work of God in saving Israel, a prelude to the saving work of Jesus Christ. Leviticus defines the holiness of God and how that affects man and worship. Numbers continues the story of Israel and Deuteronomy, provides a "second law" after the people fall away from God. This work interprets the Old Testament, as did the Early Church Fathers, in the light of the revelation of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. As St. Jerome said, "ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ." The New Testament cannot be interpreted without the light of the Old and the Old cannot be interpreted without the light of the New. Jesus stands at the center of history and gives light to it all. Thus, this series opens up the spiritual senses of Scripture so that we can truly understand God's divine plan of salvation. Unlike most modern commentaries, it puts aside much technical information, in favor of focusing upon the writings of the Early Church Fathers and the Doctors of the Church who bring out the spiritual and theological meaning of the Scriptures with great beauty and power. It presents the Scripture at the top (Revised Standard Version) and bottom of each page (Latin Vulgate) with a generous commentary in between.
