Dictionary of Deities and Demons in the Bible CD (non-boxed)

The Dictionary of Deities and Demons in the Bible is the single major work of reference on the gods, angels, demons, spirits and semi-divine heroes whose names occur in the biblical books. First published in 1995 and chosen by Choice as Best Reference Work of 1996, it is now republished in a new extensively revised edition.

30 entries appear for the first time in the new edition, while more than 100 others have been brought up to date with the latest state of research. Arranged in the order of the Latin alphabet, the more than four-hundred names are those found in the books of the Hebrew and the Greek Bible, Old and New Testament, including the Apocrypha. There are entries on divine names recognized as such by the biblical authors; divine names in theophoric toponyms and anthroponyms; secular terms which occur as divine names in neighboring civilizations, conjectural divine names, at times based on textual emendation, proposed by modern scholarship; and humans who acquired a semi-divine status in tradition.

A typical entry contains a discussion of the pertinent name, its meaning, the religio-historical background, relevant biblical passages and an up-to-date bibliography. Owing to the comprehensive coverage of names and its religio-historical emphasis, the Dictionary of Deities and Demons provides crucial information concerning the spiritual world in which the Peoples of the Book have lived. Extensive indices and cross-references provide easy access to the rich information of the dictionary. Order yours today for $69.95.  You save $20.00.

Synonyms of the New Testament CD (with Libronix search)

 By R. C. Trench

  UPC:  7-49815-17087-3

“…Greek—a language spoken by a people of the subtlest intellect; who saw distinctions, where      others saw none; who divided out to different words what others often were content to huddle confusedly under a common term…” Trench, preface to Synonyms.

R.C. Trench’s Synonyms of the New Testament is one of the earliest and most-quoted authorities on NT Greek word studies. Many later writers are indebted to him for their understanding of this subtle language. In fact, Trench receives a special mention in the preface of both Vine’s and Vincent’s word studies and is quoted over 140 times by Wuest and 104 times in TDNT.   Now, for the first time in electronic format, you can go straight to the source and gain insight for yourself into hundreds of words with great theological significance!

Synonyms offers 107 entries that compare and relate more than 325 words drawn from the Greek NT. Trench’s analysis is detailed and thorough, reflecting the author’s deep love of languages. He reveals the differences in meaning and connotation between synonymous words, tracing words’ history and usage by classical and biblical writers.

What distinguishes Trench’s Synonyms from other books of word studies or from a dictionary like TDNT? Simply this: Synonyms is highly focused on exploring the relationships between related clusters of words. Not only do you benefit from his original thoughts on a word (not filtered by a later scholar), but you also get a more thorough explanation of just how one word is similar to and differs from another.

Archbishop Richard C. Trench (1807-1886) was a man whose passion for words and etymology led to the creation of the first Oxford English Dictionary. This same energy and thirst for knowledge drove him to carefully identify New Testament word origins and distinguish between various shades of meaning.

The United Bible Society’s NT Handbook Series CD (non-boxed)

This twenty volume set of detailed commentaries provides valuable exegetical, historical, cultural, and linguistic information on the original text. The series has been instrumental in shedding light on the Scriptures so that translators all over the world could complete the important task of putting God's Word into the many languages spoken in the world today.

Over the years church leaders and Bible readers have found the UBS Handbooks to be useful for their own study, since many of the issues Bible translators must address when trying to communicate the Bible's message to modern readers are the ones Bible students must address when approaching the Bible text as a part of their own private study and devotions.

A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature (BDAG)

Described as an "invaluable reference work" (Classical Philology) and "a tool indispensable for the study of early Christian literature" (Religious Studies Review) in its previous edition, this new updated American edition of Walter Bauer's Wörterbuch zu den Schriften des Neuen Testaments builds on its predecessor's staggering deposit of extraordinary erudition relating to Greek literature from all periods. Including entries for many more words, the new edition also lists more than 25,000 additional references to classical, intertestamental, Early Christian, and modern literature.

Perhaps the single most important lexical innovation of Danker's edition is its inclusion of extended definitions for Greek terms. For instance, a key meaning of episkopos was defined in the second American edition as overseer; Danker defines it as "one who has the responsibility of safeguarding or seeing to it that something is done in the correct way, guardian." Such extended definitions give a fuller sense of the word in question, which will help avoid both anachronisms and confusion among users of the lexicon who may not be native speakers of English.

Such enhancements to the print edition are exploited in the digital version to provide even greater benefits to students of the Bible. The BDAG search dialog is a software extra that adds unprecedented functionality to this already invaluable reference tool. It is a specialized search dialog that enables the user to refine a BDAG search by limiting it to specific fields within the text. This has the effect of narrowing the results that are returned, allowing the user to get better information more quickly.
